“If what you heard from the first dwells and remains in you, then you will dwell in the Son and in the Father always.” (Amplified Bible)
1 John 2:24b
In faith …
Fran Selkirk
The three letters of John were written to warn the early Christians of the dangers of false teaching, and to hold on to the light of God and the truth of Christ.
It was a time of fear and danger, and all believers were encouraged to trust in God’s promises, that they would know the truth and have the Holy Spirit’s comfort. And by staying true to God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, they they have eternal life.
Our verse for today summarises for us how to move forward. It is by faith that we are saved, and faith is fulfilled by our reliance upon Scripture, by our faithful prayer and by our obedience to the tasks which God asks of us.
In faith we receive forgiveness, in faith we share in Communion in the fact of the sacrifice of Christ and the promise of eternal life. In faith, we move forward in service to the Church, our communities and the world. In faith we know the peace of God. Our centre is found in God. All we say, think and do should be guided by our faith.
But we must be aware that false teaching exists in our world, and we need to return to God, the Father, Son and Holy Spirit for guidance, support and comfort. Our lives are to be grounded in the light of our faith.
Shall we pray?:
Loving God, we ask you to keep us safe from false teachings. Make us totally open to you, our living God, so that we might live lives filled with love, service and worship, all acceptable to you. Enable us to challenge what is wrong and live by faith and in trust. Amen.
