“You are my hiding place; you will protect me from trouble and surround me with songs of deliverance.” Psalm 32:7 (NIV)
Hide and Seek
Margo Cunningham
As I was reading Psalm 32 one of the verses that caught my attention was verse 7. The Psalmist, David, describes God as “my hiding place”. When reflecting upon David’s words, “You are my hiding place”, I was reminded that as a child, I enjoyed playing hide and seek. It was the adrenaline I got as I ran to my hiding place before I heard the seeker say, “Ready or not, here I come”. Then it was the hope that the person who was the seeker would quit the game before I was found and that no one else would discover my hiding place before the game was over.
1 Samuel 23:9 tells us that David had learned that Saul was plotting against him. Later, in verse14, we read that Saul was hunting for David, “day after day, but God didn’t let Saul find him.” As we continue reading we see in verse 28 that “Saul quit chasing David”. God had hidden David. He had protected David from Saul’s desire to find him and have him killed. What does David do? He asks God to “surround me with songs of deliverance”. He knows that praise and worship will protect his mind and his heart, they will strengthen him for what is ahead.
Just as Saul plotted to have David killed so did the chief priests and elders plot to have Jesus crucified.
David and Jesus knew what it was to be pursued by their enemies. They both had “hiding places”, places where they knew intimacy with God through prayer. These were places where they poured out their hearts before the Father.
What does the Lord want you to pour out to him today?
Shall we pray?:
Father God, thank you for your protection. Forgive us when we neglect to seek you and rob ourselves of times of intimacy with you. Help us to attune our ear to hear your voice and your songs of deliverance. Amen.
Thinking it through:
David recognised God as His “hiding place”. Where is your hiding place? Where have you set aside to seek the Lord? During this time of Lent is now the time to set aside a designated space or place to seek the Lord?
The Psalms are a collection of songs that speak of God’s deliverance. When was the last time you sang to the Lord out-with a church or religious setting?
What is the Lord singing over you now?
