“… let us not neglect our meeting together, as some people do, but encourage one another …”
Hebrews 10:25
The Habit
Douglas Hamilton
Different churches have different patterns of worship, prayer and Bible study but a common theme across many churches is that fewer people are in the habit of meeting together. We see that played out at Sunday worship services, at prayer meetings, and in small groups. I often meet people who tell me of how they used to go to take part in such things but that they have got out of the habit and haven’t been for a while.
There are many reasons why people neglect to meet with one other. It may be that this is not something that they are used to doing, or perhaps they find it difficult to make time amidst other commitments and pressures. It may be that they had a bad experience, didn’t enjoy it or were treated unkindly. However, the longer we stop taking part in regular meetings, the harder it can be to start going back.
This time of year is as good a time as any to join in with others as there will undoubtedly be some additional services or meetings being arranged locally throughout Lent and Holy Week. Being part of these gatherings is not just about what you get from it, but also what you give by simply being there. The knowledge that others are accompanying you on your Christian journey can be a profound source of encouragement.
There is no doubt that times of personal prayer and devotion are important, but to be a follower of Christ is something to be done in community with others. As we gather together, we encourage one another and strengthen one another in our faith. Following Jesus can be difficult at times, but together we can help those who are struggling to hold onto hope (v.23), and motivate each other to acts of love and good deeds (v.24).
Shall we pray?:
Loving God, we thank you for the Christian communities that you have placed us in, and for all those who organise meetings and services in our local area. We pray that over this season of Lent you will draw more of your people to gather together through our local churches. Amen.
Thinking it through:
Is there a service, meeting or event coming up in your local church that you could make an extra effort to go to?
Could you offer a lift to someone who would love to meet up with others but is currently finding it difficult to attend?
Might there be someone you could visit in order to spend time encouraging them in their walk with Jesus?
