Lent Devotions – Day 36 – April 9th 2025

Daily Thought for Wednesday 9th April 2025

“Lord, I have heard of your fame; I stand in awe of your deeds Lord. Repeat them in our day, in our time make them known; in wrath remember mercy.”
Habakkuk 3:2 (NIV)

A Prayer for Revival
Keith Mack

Habakkuk’s prayer is a cry of wonder, humility, and hope. He was faced with oncoming judgment, so the prophet looks back on God’s mighty works in history, remembering God’s faithfulness and power. He pleads for God to act again, to revive his works in his time, even amidst his righteous judgment.

I remember at school hiding my report cards, neglecting to tell my parents about parents’ night, burying my head in the sand when I had made a mistake. Rather than owning up to poor choices, lack of work and wrong decisions, I would somehow hope that I wouldn’t get found out, but I always did!

Habakkuk in this verse teaches us a timeless truth: when we feel overwhelmed by circumstances or the brokenness of the world, we can turn to God with a heart that remembers his faithfulness. Habakkuk doesn’t question God’s authority or justice; instead, he prays in line with God’s character. He asks for revival, for God to renew his deeds of deliverance, but also pleads for mercy in the midst of judgment.

We, too, are often in need of revival—both personally and as a church. We need to approach God with awe and faith, remembering his past works in Scripture and in our own lives. God’s miracles, provision, and redemption are reminders that how he was, he still is today. When we pray for revival, we’re asking God to transform hearts, to renew his church, and to bring light to a dark world.

Today, let this prayer guide us. Let’s stand in awe of God’s greatness, but be bold to ask him to move in our lives and our church.

Shall we pray?:
As Habakkuk prayed, so we pray, Lord: “I have heard of your fame; I stand in awe of your deeds Lord.” Repeat them in our day, in our time make them known; in wrath remember mercy. Amen.
