Pathway to Pentecost: Daily Thought for Sunday 26th April 2026

Daily Thought for Sunday 26th April 2026

“They praised God and demonstrated God’s goodness to everyone. The Lord added daily to the community, those who were being saved.”
Acts 2:47 (CEB)

To one another

The clue is in the title of the book. It’s not “Private Reflections”, or even “Food for Thought”. It’s “The Acts of the Apostles”.

Acts. Actions. Doing things.

More than that. It’s doing things together.

As we read in the first verse of Acts chapter 2, when the day of Pentecost came the Jesus-followers of the day were all gathered together in one place. And from then on in, they stuck together.

It’s true: their rushing out into the streets provoked a fairly mixed response – amazing some people, confusing others and leading yet more to think they were drunk! But at least people responded!

When Peter explained, though, that everything people were seeing was from God – the God who had sent his own Son to live, die and rise again, for them, an impressive 3000 people felt moved by Peter’s words to respond in faith.

But there were even more amazing and wonderful things to come.

The old and new Jesus followers then met together – to pray together and to worship God together, yes – but also to share food and resources; to help one another and to care.

And it was through doing that, that the Lord added to their community.

Daily.

This was not a once-a-week-for-an-hour, way of following Jesus. It was full time – a full time living out of faith that caught people’s attention and drew them in.

How can we, in Lothian & Borders, praise God and demonstrate God’s goodness to everyone in that way?

As then, so today people long to be part of a meaningful, caring, open and welcoming community. How can we help them find a sense of belonging – of belonging to God and to one another?

Shall we pray?
Lord Jesus, in community with the Creator and the Spirit, distinct but different: show us, we pray, how to be in community with you and one another. For your sake. Amen.
